How to Make Gingerbread Candy Dome or Money Holder

Get the template: Download and print the gingerbread man or gingerbread woman. Cut the gingerbread template out.

Make the Gingerbread Person: Place the template on the brown card stock. Trace. Place on the other piece of card stock and trace again. Cut out the gingerbread men. Set one aside. On one of them, trace a circle using the mason jar lid. Use a pair of scissors to cut out the circle. Decorate the face and eyes. Take a marker and draw a smile in between the button cheeks.

Measure and cut the rick rack to fit the arms and legs of the gingerbread man/woman. Glue the rick rack to the body and let it dry.

On the 2nd Gingerbread Person: On the second gingerbread man, create an X on the body's center and use scissors to make a hole in the middle of the X. Cut along the X to create an opening for accessing the candy and money inside. Cut small strips of foam tape and position them around the circle on the back of the decorated gingerbread man to secure it in place.

Add the Dome: Secure half of the plastic ornament into the circle, with the dome side facing outward.

Fill it with candy and/or money, using a string to tightly roll and tie the money if needed. Add glue to the second gingerbread man and place it on top to seal the dome. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Where can I find the plastic domes?

These plastic domes are just fillable plastic ornaments. They are available on places like Amazon or other online stores as well as craft stores during Christmas time. You can also purchase shaker domes that are used for making cards.

What kind of candy can be used?

When giving money as a gift, use wrapped candy like Hershey's Kisses or Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to fill the dome. Otherwise, loose candy such as M&Ms, Skittles, or Reese's Pieces can be used.

Alternative Uses for the Gingerbread Candy Dome Design

  • Instead of using a gingerbread man/woman shape, you can use other holiday shapes like snowmen, Christmas trees, or presents.
  • Use different types of candy to create a colorful and unique design. You can also mix in small trinkets or toys for added surprises.
  • Add personalized touches by drawing names or messages on the foam tape strips before attaching them to the back of the gingerbread man.
  • Instead of using plastic domes, you can also use small mason jars or glass ornaments. Just make sure they are securely closed before adding candy and money inside.
  • This candy dome design can also work for other occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, or weddings by using different themed shapes and fillings.
  • Instead of leaving a space to access the domes, seal them closed and fill them with glitter and sparkles. The gingerbread man can be used as a card or room decoration, rather than a candy or money holder.

Instructions

  1. Download and print the gingerbread man/woman template. Use scissors to cut out the template.
  2. Place the template onto one half of the brown cardstock and trace it, then position the template on the other half of the brown cardstock and trace it again. Cut out the two gingerbread men. Set one aside.
  3. On one gingerbread man's body, draw or trace a circle about 2.75 inches in diameter. (The outer
portion of a mason jar lid works well for this template.)
  4. Using a pair of scissors, carefully poke a hole into the center of the circle and then cut out the circle.
  5. Next, use glue to adhere the eyes and buttons (for the cheeks), creating a face. Take a marker and draw a smile in between the button cheeks.
  6. Measure the arms and legs of the gingerbread man/woman, and cut the rick rack to fit. You will need 2 pieces for the arms and 2 pieces for the legs. Use glue to stick rick rack to the body and allow the glue to dry completely.
  7. On the second gingerbread man, draw an X on the center of the body and poke a hole with the scissors in the middle of the X. Cut the X to make an opening to be able to take the candy and money out.
  8. Cut small strips of foam tape and place them around the circle on the backside of the decorated gingerbread man.
  9. Next, take ½ of the plastic ornament and secure it into the circle with the dome side facing outward.  Fill it with candy and/or money.  (If using money, you can use a string to tie
around the money to keep it rolled tightly.)
  10. Add glue to the second gingerbread man and place it on top to seal the dome.
  11. Allow the glue to dry completely.
