Making Science Fun for Kids

Creating educational experiences for our children at home can be a challenge. Especially when it comes to subjects that we don't particularly get excited over like science! But, with a little effort and planning it can absolutely be done.

My son likes science an awful lot, but often struggles with grasping the concepts. Not to long ago, he had a project to do for extra credit. The goal was to explain and show an understanding of the earth's layers. Since we both love to cook and my son loves to be my little helper in the kitchen, we came up with the perfect idea.

earth cake

We decided that we could create a gigantic layer cake to show the different layers of the earth with this edible science project. This would be easy to achieve with the help of some fun candy toppings and different colored frosting.

Since the cake ended up being absolutely huge, we decided to take it one step further by creating a large earth shaped cover. He needed to be able to carry it on the bus to school as well as further show that the cake layers were in fact representative of the earth's layers. Using cardboard, we designed an easy to make geodesic dome. My son painted it and cut out paper shapes to represent land. It came out perfect! Whether you are using pipettes or something more practical around the house, making science lessons fun can be done!

With our creative idea, we used a mixer and a spatula as our Lab equipment and ended up having both a fun and educational day in the kitchen.

What are some of your "go-to" ideas for making science fun at home? We would love to hear what you have come up with!
