Polka Dot Furniture Makeover
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of CORT. All opinions are 100% mine.
Don't you love a perfectly decorated home? I have a lot of work to do yet because it's expensive. Furniture is at the top of the list! That's why upcycling is the way to go to get more bang for your buck. I picked out the perfect discount furniture pieces at CORT Clearance Center to give a makeover. I'm going to show you how I brought some cheer to my home with this easy polka dot furniture makeover.
Last weekend, I ventured over to my local CORT Clearance Center for the first time and was instantly impressed. The prices were way lower than I imagined. The overall quality was high end with some minor superficial damage if anything. Everything I found was really modern and fresh, we're not talking outdated furniture. Check for your local clearance center here to see if you can take advantage of these deep discounts, too.
There was a really cute ultra modern chair that I instantly knew I wanted and as an added bonus, a mirror that was under $5! With a little help and a fun DIY plan, I knew that these pieces would be just what I wanted for a fun corner in my office.
The white chair wasn't visually damaged, it just needed a deep cleaning and some protector pads on the legs. I started out with soap and water, but found the best results with one of those "magic" eraser sponges. It pulled up the deeper dirt stains.
DIY Polka Dot Furniture Makeover
The first thing to do is know what furniture materials you are working with. The best I could surmise is that this chair is a faux leather making it the perfect material a paint makeover.
Supplies used:
Paint (Interior)
Paint Dotter
Polka Dot Stencil
Sealant Spray if Desired
Painter's Tape
Measuring Tape, Pencil & Tape
After a little experimenting, I found the best combo for painting polka dots on this chair.
For the best polka dot layout, make sure to plan how you want yours to look. I went for a symmetrical look. Using measuring tape for placement and a pencil, make a tiny marking where you want to paint each polka dot. This will help for an overall perfect look.
For perfect polka-dots, use a stencil and tape it into place EACH time you paint. If not, the slight shifting can really mess them up. Using a foam paint dotter will also help you control the paint flow to avoid dripping. This is a winning combo after some trial and error.
After the paint dries, you might want to use an appropriate sealant spray for the furniture material type. Voila! You now have an amazing modern look. Best part is that it's so affordable to do.
For my mirror makeover, I wanted to try something super simple that would make a nice contrast with my new polka dot chair.
First, I made sure to lightly sand off the small scratches on the wood. They were only very superficial so a filler wasn't needed. Make sure your wood is clean before painting.
Prepare the mirror for painting. Use painter's tape to avoid getting paint on the mirrored surface first.
You can opt to use a primer first, especially if you're painting over something dark. I skipped this and went straight to painting. I did white paint and ended up doing three coats to perfectly cover this mirror. Let it dry and you have a whole new look!
To add polka dots to the mirror, I used wall art stickers that come in a pretty blue glittered dots. Since they are like stickers, but generally reusable, they are easy to work with. I went with a more random look with the mirror and I love the way it looks next to my new upcycled chair. How much fun is this?
