Now that you have your ingredients, it's time to dig into how to make this yummy Easter cake.

HOW TO MAKE DIRT CAKE WITH PEEPS

Let's make our yummy dirt cake! The steps seem long but they are really simple, I promise.

Start off by crushing the Oreo Cookies by using a food processor or a rolling pin.

Next up, add ⅔ of the Oreo crumbs, melted butter, and salt into a medium sized bow. Mix everything until combined thoroughly.

Pour the Oreo mixture into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Press firmly into an even layer. Then store the baking dish in the fridge while you make up the rest of the cake filling.

Beat cream cheese and butter in a large bowl with either a hand or stand mixer until the mixture comes out smooth. Next, add powdered sugar to the mixture and beat until smooth again. Then, gently fold in the whipped topping and set this aside for now.

Next, in a small bowl add 1 ½ cups of cold milk and vanilla pudding mix. Whisk the ingredients vigorously until the mixture begins to thicken up onto a pudding consistency.

Then, separate the cream cheese mixture into halves. Fold the vanilla pudding into one portion of the cream cheese mixture until combined.

Spread the vanilla pudding mixture evenly over your Oreo base. Place the dish back into the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes so that the vanilla pudding layer can set.

While that's chilling, it's time to make the chocolate pudding layer. Whisk the remaining 1 ½ cups of milk with the chocolate pudding mix until it's thickened into a pudding consistency.

Next, we will fold the chocolate pudding into the remaining cream cheese mixture that we set aside until everything is combined perfectly.

It's time to spread the chocolate pudding mixture smoothly right over that vanilla pudding layer.

Now it's time to finish things up by sprinkling the remaining Oreo crumbs over the chocolate pudding layer. Then, cover the dish with foil, plastic or a cover and refrigerate for a minimum of three hours or overnight.

Right before serving, we will prepare the coconut grass. Add the coconut and food color to a plastic baggy and shake rapidly to evenly color the coconut. You can also massage the coconut in the baggy to help evenly coat with color.

Once, the coconut grass is ready you can sprinkle it over the top of the oreo crumbs layer we put down.

Ingredients

  • 1 family-size packet of Oreos (39 cookies)
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 16 ounces whipped topping (cool whip)
  • 3 cups cold whole milk, divided
  • 1 (3.4 ounce) box of instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 1 (3.9 ounce) box of instant chocolate pudding mix
  • ¾ cup shredded sweetened coconut
  • 3-4 drops green food color
  • 12-15 Peeps marshmallow bunnies
  • ½ cup candy eggs

Instructions

Crush Oreo cookies finely with a food processor or rolling pin.

Add ⅔ of the Oreo crumbs, melted butter, and salt and mix in a medium bowl and combine.

Spread the crumb mixture into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish to make an even layer.

Put the baking dish into your fridge while you make the filling.

Use a hand or stand-mixer to beat cream cheese and butter until mixture is smooth. Add in powdered sugar and beat until smooth again. Gently fold in the whipped topping.

Divide this cream cheese mixture into two equal parts.

In a small bowl, combine 1½ cups of cold milk and vanilla pudding mix, then whisk rapidly until pudding forms.

Fold the vanilla pudding into one portion of the cream cheese mixture until blended.

Evenly spread that vanilla pudding mixture over the Oreo base in the baking dish.

Place the baking dish back in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to set.

Prepare the chocolate pudding layer. Rapidly whisk the remaining 1 ½ cups of milk with the chocolate pudding.

Fold the chocolate pudding into the remaining cream cheese mixture until fully blended.

Spread the chocolate pudding mixture directly over the vanilla pudding layer.

Sprinkle the remaining ⅓ of Oreo cookie crumbs over the chocolate pudding layer and refrigerate for a minimum of 3 hours or overnight.

Before serving, prepare the coconut grass by adding the coconut and food color to a plastic baggy and shake vigorously to color the coconut. If needed, you can also massage the coconut in the baggy to help evenly distribute color.

Sprinkle the coconut over the top of the cake. Lastly, decorate the cake with the Peeps bunnies and mini eggs.

Notes

You can store cake in refrigerator for up to 3 days when wrapped tight with plastic wrap.

Use the whole OREO cookie when preparing the crumb mixture.

You can easily swap out instant pudding mixture flavors if you like.

If you don't like coconut, you can skip that layer.

You can also use jelly beans or any kind of small candies in place of the candy coated eggs.
